Private label, white label or contract manufacturing: which do you need?
It depends on what you bring. If a product the manufacturer already makes suits you, you need white label: your brand on its product. If you have an idea but no formula, you need private label: a product developed for you and sold under your brand. If you already have a formula or specification, you need contract manufacturing: production to your formula. Manufacturers do not all use these words the same way, so describe the work in your enquiry. Of the 415 manufacturers listed on NordSourced, 108 (26%) name two or all three of these services on their websites.
What is the difference between the three?
| Service | What you bring | What the manufacturer does | Confirm before you order |
|---|---|---|---|
| White label | Your brand, label and packaging choices | Supplies a product it already makes, under your brand | Which changes are possible, the minimum per product, and whether other brands sell the same product |
| Private label | An idea or brief: what the product should contain or do | Develops the product for you, tests it and makes it | The development stages and costs, who owns the finished formula, and the first commercial batch |
| Contract manufacturing | Your own formula or specification, or a product already on sale | Checks that it can make it on its equipment, then produces it | Changes needed for its equipment, who buys the materials, and which tests and documents you receive |
These are the meanings NordSourced uses whenever it explains the terms. A change to a ready-made product, its pack or its label can turn white label into a small development project, so ask which changes the starting offer includes.
Do manufacturers use these words the same way?
No. ERA Scientifico, a Latvian food supplement manufacturer, uses them as this page does: it calls its ready-made products white label and gives separate terms for custom manufacturing. Cosmetics Nord, a Latvian cosmetics manufacturer, calls its Selfnamed service “Flexible Private Label Skincare”, from one piece, with “150+ Ready-to-Brand Products” in its catalogue. That is a product the manufacturer already makes, under your brand: what this page calls white label.
Neither use is wrong. It is why your enquiry should say what you bring and what you want the manufacturer to do, and why the quotation should list the work it includes.
Which of these services do manufacturers in Northern Europe name?
Each row counts the manufacturers NordSourced lists for that product group. A manufacturer can name several services, so the columns overlap, and one that makes products in two groups is counted in both.
| Product group | Manufacturers | White label | Private label | Contract manufacturing | Two or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetics | 74 | 21 (28%) | 46 (62%) | 54 (73%) | 38 (51%) |
| Food supplements | 68 | 22 (32%) | 36 (53%) | 50 (74%) | 33 (49%) |
| Furniture & interior | 95 | 12 (13%) | 22 (23%) | 68 (72%) | 11 (12%) |
| Food & beverages | 106 | 7 (7%) | 79 (75%) | 40 (38%) | 18 (17%) |
| Home textiles | 31 | 4 (13%) | 18 (58%) | 16 (52%) | 7 (23%) |
| Household & cleaning | 39 | 4 (10%) | 31 (79%) | 15 (38%) | 10 (26%) |
| All manufacturers | 415 | 69 (17%) | 233 (56%) | 232 (56%) | 108 (26%) |
The service named most often is private label in food & beverages, home textiles and household & cleaning, and contract manufacturing in cosmetics, food supplements and furniture & interior. In cosmetics and food supplements, manufacturers are the most likely to name more than one: 38 of 74 and 33 of 68. In every group, white label is the service named least often.
The counts follow the manufacturers’ own words, so a private label count can include ready-made products sold as private label, like the Selfnamed catalogue above. If you want a ready-made product, ask whether a manufacturer’s private label offer includes products it already makes.
Can I start with a ready-made product and develop my own later?
Often with the same manufacturer: 39 of the 69 manufacturers on NordSourced that name white label also name contract manufacturing or product development. Ask before the first order which packaging, specifications and documents carry over, and which parts become a new project.
The minimum order changes with the route. ERA Scientifico states that its minimum for ready-made (white label) products “starts at just 500 bottles”, and that for custom product manufacturing “the minimum is 1000+ bottles (or 60 000 capsules), depending on your chosen dosage and formula.” Ask for the minimum of the route you need; see how to compare minimum orders.
Who owns the formula?
Ask before the first order, and ask for the answer in writing, in the proposed agreement: who owns the finished formula, whether other brands can buy the same product, and which documents you receive if you move production elsewhere. With white label the formula stays the manufacturer’s. Paying for development does not by itself make a formula yours: the agreement decides.
What should my first enquiry say?
We need [product and form] for sale in [market]. We want [a product you already make, under our brand / a product developed for us / production to our formula or specification]. The first order is [number of finished packs per product], in [pack size and packaging]. Our target launch date is [date]. Please state the minimum order, the work included, any development charges and the production schedule.
You can also send this brief through NordSourced’s free request form: we ask the manufacturers you approve, without your name.
How these numbers were made
The counts come from NordSourced’s data of 3 Oct 2026: the 415 manufacturers listed in Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, each listed because its own website says it makes products for other brands. The service labels are NordSourced’s reading of each manufacturer’s own website, the same labels the lists filter by, and each profile quotes what the website says, with links. Where a label is missing, the website did not say; that does not mean the service is not offered. The ERA Scientifico and Cosmetics Nord quotes were checked on their websites on 2 Oct 2026. The counts describe the manufacturers NordSourced lists, not every manufacturer in the region, and nothing here was tested, inspected or quoted for a real order.
