What is Latvia known for manufacturing?

Latvia is known first for wood. Wood products made up 26.99% of its manufacturing net turnover in 2024, the highest share of the 26 EU countries with data, against an EU average of 1.67% (Eurostat). Food products follow with 19.14%. Manufacturing labour cost EUR 14.9 an hour in 2025, the lowest of the five Baltic and Nordic countries.

What are Latvia's main manufacturing industries?

Wood, food and chemicals. In 2024 wood products, not counting furniture, brought EUR 3.58 billion of net turnover, 26.99% of all Latvian manufacturing; food products brought EUR 2.54 billion, 19.14% (Eurostat). The Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) puts chemicals and pharmaceuticals at 9.7% of manufacturing turnover in 2023, the fourth largest sector, with 76.7% of their sales exported.

Latvian manufacturing by branch, 2024 (Eurostat). Every enterprise in the branch is counted, not only those that make for other brands.

A high share means Latvian manufacturing leans on that branch, not that the branch is large next to Germany's or Poland's. For cosmetics Latvia has many small producers: 114 enterprises with 910 people between them.

What does Latvia export most?

Wood. LIAA's forest industry profile says that "exports of wood and its products were the most significant export sector in 2023, comprising 17.3 % of total export value"; forest-product exports reached EUR 3.3 billion, 22% less than in 2022. The food and beverage sector exports 42.2% of its turnover, and chemical and pharmaceutical companies 76.7% of their sales.

Wood still led in 2025. The Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) reports "EUR 19.54 billion worth of goods" exported that year, EUR 698.1 million or 3.7% more than in 2024 (provisional figures). Wood, articles of wood and wood charcoal were 15.3% of the total, electrical machinery and equipment 10.2%, and mineral fuels and oils 8.5%. Wood exports fell 1.3% on 2024, while mineral products rose 24.7%.

Which product groups do Latvian manufacturers make for other brands?

By group they make food and beverages (25), furniture and interior products (18), cosmetics (13), food supplements (12), household and cleaning products (3), home textiles (2). Eurostat counts every enterprise in a branch and NordSourced only those that offer private label or contract manufacturing, so the two sets of numbers measure different things and should not be compared one to one.

How much does manufacturing labour cost in Latvia?

EUR 14.9 an hour in 2025, the lowest of the five countries NordSourced covers and less than half the EU average of EUR 35.0 (Eurostat, manufacturing). Labour is one part of a unit price next to materials, packaging and batch size, so a gap in labour cost is not the same gap in what you pay per unit.

How do I check a Latvian manufacturer?

Start with its 11-digit registration number in the Register of Enterprises information portal. Food producers also appear in the register of enterprises supervised by the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD), published as open data. Then work through how to check a private label manufacturer: proof that it makes for other brands, where your product will be made, and certificates.

Questions and answers

Is Latvia in the EU and the euro area?

Yes. Latvia has been an EU member state since 1 May 2004 and has used the euro since 1 January 2014. Goods made in Latvia move to other EU countries without customs duties and are usually invoiced in euro; a buyer outside the EU imports them under its own country's rules.

What is Latvia's biggest export?

Wood and wood products. LIAA puts them at 17.3% of Latvia's total export value in 2023, with forest-product exports of EUR 3.3 billion. In manufacturing the same branch is 26.99% of net turnover (Eurostat, 2024), the highest share in the EU.

Does Latvia make furniture?

Yes, on a smaller scale than wood. Eurostat counted 965 furniture enterprises with 6,217 people and EUR 395 million of turnover in 2024, 2.98% of Latvian manufacturing, the third highest share in the EU. NordSourced lists 18 Latvian furniture and interior manufacturers that make for other brands; see the Latvian furniture list.

Does Latvia make textiles for other brands?

Yes, through sewing companies. LIAA writes that "the industry is dominated by sewing companies that act as outsourced production facilities for EU brands"; textiles and clothing were 2.5% of manufacturing output in 2023. Eurostat counted 254 enterprises making made-up textile articles such as bed linen and towels in 2024. NordSourced lists 2 Latvian home textile manufacturers.

Is manufacturing in Latvia cheaper than in Sweden or Finland?

Labour is. An hour of manufacturing labour cost EUR 14.9 in Latvia in 2025, against EUR 43.6 in Finland and EUR 47.2 in Sweden (Eurostat). What you pay per unit also depends on materials, packaging, batch size and who develops the product, so compare real quotations for the same brief.

How many private label manufacturers are there in Latvia?

NordSourced lists 82, each because its own website says it makes products for other brands; 17 of them publish a minimum order. That is not every manufacturer in Latvia: companies that offer the service without saying so on their website are not counted. The ranked lists are on the Latvia page.

Which Latvian manufacturers take a small first order?

12 of the 17 Latvian manufacturers that publish a minimum order state 500 or fewer finished units, for example Allreasons, Cosmetic Lab, Cosmetics Nord, ERA Scientifico, Glora. Each figure belongs to one service, often a ready-made product rather than your own formula, so read what it covers on the manufacturer's profile before comparing; the minimum order guide explains how.

Does Latvia make food supplements for other brands?

Yes. NordSourced lists 12 Latvian food supplement manufacturers whose websites say they make for other brands; see the Latvian supplement list. Eurostat has no separate branch for food supplements, so there is no official count of supplement producers to set beside it. 3 of them publish their minimum order in capsules rather than bottles.

Which product group has the most Latvian manufacturers on NordSourced?

Food & beverages, with 25 of the 82 Latvian manufacturers listed, followed by furniture & interior with 18. The count includes only companies whose own website says they make products for other brands, and a company that makes more than one kind of product counts in each of its groups.
